Where to train in Chamonix before the UTMB®? Our routes from Le PlanB

To train in Chamonix before theUTMB ® is to plunge straight into the scenery that inspires the world's greatest trail runners. Here, every trail is a playground, every climb a challenge, and every panorama a reward. Whether you're preparing for the UTMB ® or one of its satellite races, the choice of training routes is strategic for building altitude, endurance and technique.

We've put together three itineraries starting from the PlanB Chamonix, perfect for combining effort and pleasure, just outside the hotel!

Route 1: Montenvers - Signal Forbes - Plan de l'Aiguille (21 km / 1450 m D+)

This route is a classic for all those who want to get into the mountain atmosphere right from the start.

From PlanB, head for the Planards sector to tackle the ascent to Montenvers. This demanding first section plunges you into a mineral landscape, with the Chamonix Valley and the Mer de Glace in the background.

A little higher up, at Signal Forbes, you'll enjoy an exceptional panorama of the Drus, the Grandes Jorasses and the Mont-Blanc massif. It's the perfect spot for a photo break... or simply to catch your breath.

Next, cross the Grand Balcon Nord de Chamonix towards the Plan de l'Aiguille: a more rolling passage, but not to be underestimated, as the altitude makes itself felt. From here, start your descent towards Chamonix, ending up directly in front of the PlanB gate.

This course is ideal for :

  • Work on long ascents and descents
  • Build endurance on varied terrain
  • Training to manage effort at altitude
  • Enjoy spectacular views of the Mer de Glace and the Mont-Blanc massif

PlanB tip: leave early in the morning to avoid the heat and enjoy the sunrise over the peaks, an unforgettable spectacle!

Route 2: La Source de l'Arveyron (13 km / 330 m D+)

This second itinerary is less technical but just as exotic. Perfect for days when you want to work on your endurance without racking up too much elevation gain.

From PlanB, drive through Chamonix town center to the Désert Blanc area, a peaceful space that looks like the end of the world. Follow the signs to the Source de l'Arveyron.

You can extend the pleasure by taking a short loop on the surrounding trails, to enjoy the freshness and calm of the area. The return journey takes the same route, allowing you to maintain a steady pace and finish on a smooth note.

This course is ideal for :

  • Active recovery outings
  • Moderate-speed endurance training
  • Discover a less-frequented but equally charming corner of the valley

PlanB tip: this route is perfect at the end of the day, when the colors of the setting sun illuminate the glacier and create an almost magical atmosphere.

Route 3: Lavancher - Argentière - Flégère (27 km / 1700 m D+)

For experienced runners or those who want to get into real condition before the UTMB ®, this course is a real challenge. With its 27 km and 1,700 m vertical drop, it will test your endurance, your technique... and your mental strength.

From Le PlanB, head for Le Lavancher along a gradual path that takes you all the way to Argentière. Cross the village and continue to Montroc, a charming hamlet at the foot of the peaks. This is where things get serious: the demanding climb up to Le Bechar offers superb panoramic views of the Mont-Blanc massif.

Once you've reached the top, head for La Flégère, a strategic point well known to trail enthusiasts. Now's the time to test your relaunch after a long climb. The descent to Chamonix follows a variety of trails, alternating between rolling sections and more technical sections, before returning to PlanB for a well-deserved rest.

This course is ideal for :

  • Simulate race conditions on the UTMB ®.
  • Work on gradient and effort management
  • Enjoy spectacular views over the entire valley

PlanB tip: remember to take your poles with you, especially if you want to save your legs for the long final descent.
