Working at PlanB
With its majestic glaciers, alpine forests, and breathtaking views, the Chamonix Valley is a one-of-a-kind playground for mountain lovers. But this fragile environment deserves our full attention. Today, traveling is no longer just about discovering a destination—it’s also about taking care of the places we visit.
Good news: it’s entirely possible to enjoy Chamonix to the fullest while reducing your environmental impact. Here are a few simple steps you can take to have a more sustainable vacation in the heart of the Mont Blanc region.
What’s the best way to get to the mountains? By respecting them from the very start. By train, bus, or shuttle: the Chamonix Valley is easily accessible without a car. This helps reduce your trip’s carbon footprint and lets you fully enjoy the scenery from the very first kilometers.
The train: a spectacular arrival. Have you ever had the chance to see Chamonix’s iconic, beautiful red train? From France and Switzerland, there are several connections that make it easy to reach the valley. And between us, admiring the Alpine scenery from a train window is already part of the journey.
Carpooling for regional trips. Travel takes on a whole new dimension when you share the ride. Carpooling is an excellent way to reach the valley while reducing mountain traffic—a simple way to split the cost, share the mileage, and sometimes even exchange a few valuable hiking tips before reaching the peaks.
Once you’re there, forget about the car. Give it a rest—your legs will thank you! From PlanB, everything is within walking distance: a sunny terrace, a hike, a local shop, or a great restaurant. Here, slowing down also means reducing your environmental impact.
Buses in the Valley. Want to explore the valley in a different way? The buses connect the main villages of Chamonix as well as hiking trailheads, ski areas, and must-see attractions—a simple, convenient, and more sustainable way to get around.
Local trains. Hop aboard the valley’s legendary red train and let it carry you through spectacular scenery, past alpine forests, mountain villages, and the iconic peaks of the Mont Blanc massif. A little perk from PlanB: thanks to your Guest Card, your ride is free!
Walking and biking. For short trips, nothing beats active transportation. Numerous walking trails and bike paths let you explore the valley at your own pace, while fully enjoying the surrounding nature.
At PlanB Chamonix, we fully embrace the Leave No Trace philosophy, which encourages everyone to enjoy nature while preserving it. In the meantime, here are its main principles:
Traveling responsibly also starts with what you eat! Haute-Savoie is brimming with specialties that tell the story of the region: local cheeses, artisanal cured meats, mountain honey, regional fruits and vegetables, and local craft beers.
Choosing these products helps support local producers while reducing transportation distances—a principle we also apply in the kitchen at PlanB, as described in our article on local producers.
Prioritize local sources. Farmers' markets, independent shops, local grocery stores, and artisans all play an active role in the valley’s economy. Every purchase made from local businesses helps sustain the region throughout the year.
Eat according to the seasons. Seasonal food requires fewer resources to produce and transport. It’s also an opportunity to discover the region’s authentic flavors as the months go by.
Accommodations play a key role in the overall impact of a trip. A committed establishment typically implements several concrete measures:
Staying at a place that shares your values helps sustain the efforts you’ve made throughout your trip—that’s what we discuss in our article about our sustainable hotel. It’s also a way to support tourism businesses that invest in preserving their local area.
At PlanB Chamonix, we are convinced that the future of tourism is built collectively, through a multitude of small actions and concrete commitments. Because loving the mountains also means helping to protect them.
Visiting Chamonix responsibly doesn’t mean missing out on experiences or comfort. Quite the opposite. Taking the train instead of driving, discovering local producers, using the valley’s public transportation, or observing wildlife with respect often allows you to experience the mountains in a more authentic way.
Every action counts. And together, we can help preserve the exceptional beauty of the Mont Blanc Valley for future generations.
Yes, easily. Trains, buses, and shuttles serve the entire valley, and from PlanB, everything is within walking distance.
Yes, your ride on the red valley train is free thanks to your Guest Card—a handy and eco-friendly perk.
Prioritize sustainable transportation, stay on marked trails, buy local, and choose eco-friendly accommodations—like PlanB.
An approach that encourages people to enjoy nature while leaving as little of a footprint as possible. We've dedicated an entire blog post to it.
